Dr Nancy Kwangwa is a distinguished information and knowledge management professional dedicated to advancing digital inclusion, AI literacy, media and information literacy and equitable access to information. She currently serves as Deputy Librarian at the Women’s University in Africa, where she leads initiatives in research support, digital literacy, and scholarly communication.
To support community development initiatives, Nancy founded the Zimbabwe Information and Technology Empowerment Centre (ZITEC), a national NGO that promotes access to information, digital equity and media literacy. She has designed and implemented transformative and empowering training workshops, lectures, and media and information literacy resources that have benefited over 10,000 community members, including policymakers, community members, students, and educators.
She is a published researcher whose work explores the intersections of media and information literacy, AI literacy, access to information, and community development. Her research highlights the critical role of library and information professionals in empowering communities to navigate the digital age, combat disinformation and participate meaningfully in knowledge societies. Through her scholarly work, she advocates for inclusive, rights-based approaches to information access with a particular focus on marginalised populations.
Dr Kwangwa holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Studies from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, as well as Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Library and Information Science from the National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe. In pursuit of continuous professional development, she participated in the U.S. Department of State’s Community Solutions Programme. In recognition of her contributions to community development and academic librarianship, she was honoured to be nominated as a specialist for the U.S. Department of State’s Community Engagement Exchange Programme and selected as a fellow of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Dr. Kwangwa is a member of the IFLA Law Libraries Section and Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Library Association, Mashonaland Branch.
