My Journey in AI and its impact on student life
Artificial Intelligence has become more than just a tool for me it’s been a way to explore my creativity, push my limits, and find solutions to real problems. Through my journey in programming, engineering, and robotics, I started off when I was 13 years old with a simple pre trained AI model from tensorflow, which was just added to an ordinary object detection software that I had made to help me identify objects in video games. I got a spark of curiosity and wondered to myself, what if I could turn it from just using AI to harness the power of video games into something I could use in the real world, and so I did.
Thereafter, I got more interested and trained my first AI myself using YoloV5 as my model and overnight training on Google collab. I then came up with my first camera object detection software to use in real time. This further on, led to me using this knowledge to build an object detection software for litter detection and flag out affected zones in the sea.
My team and I are an example of the impact AI can have on students and their achievements I have experienced how AI can inspire young people to dream bigger while also tackling issues that matter, like protecting the environment.
My most proud achievement so far has been leading a project that uses AI for sea surveillance, detecting and removing litter from the ocean, which won 1st place at the First Lego League Zimbabwe. Alongside this, I’ve earned 2nd place at the Irene Science Expo and 3rd place at the African Science Buskers competition.
As captain of my school’s Coding and Robotics Club, I continue to grow my skills while encouraging others to discover the power of AI. This journey has shown me that AI is not just about technology. It is about using innovation to create a better future.
